SDOTD 7/27/2007 – MT: Land Ownership Information

July 25, 2007

Today’s State Database of the Day is from Montana:

Montana Cadastral Mapping Project – Montana land ownership information accessible through a parcel search or through browsing a property map. Maintained by the GIS Bureau of the Information Technology Services Division.

This database is searchable by “geocode”, owner and subdivision. The last two searches can be limited by county. The parcel detail records are rich with data with too many fields to list here but include owner contact information, details about buildings on property and improvements to yards on property. In addition, a map putting the parcel in context is available.

One word of caution about this database. DO NOT use it to build yourself a mailing list of Montana property owners. That would be a misdemeanor under Montana state law. Details at web site.

Today’s State Database of the Day comes from Missouri and is really interesting once you understand what it is for. While you might believe as I did that this was the page for a Campaign Finance Committee of the Missouri State Government, in actually this is a powerful tool for finding information about groups registered to do political activity in Missouri, whether they are ALLIANCE FOR ELDERLY HEALTH CARE or LIBERTY FORWARD.

The database is searchable by committee name, candidate name, treasurer name, committee type (political party, campaign, continuing, out-of-state, etc). Records include committee officer names and contact information and links to PDFs of required filings including summaries of campaign contributions.
