KAC ROSTER ARTIST My “Creative Storytelling” workshop uses storytelling to teach the basics of creative writing and performing. It is an excellent way to help writers and performers understand plot, character and setting. I use lecture/demonstrations and performance in combination with hands-on experience. Typically, each class meets daily. The residency begins with a lecture that illustrates an approach to character, plot or setting. Then the students work in small groups or individually to create a story that they will then perform. The basics—Who, What, When, Where, Why and How are covered. By seeing how character (Who), plot (What) and setting (Where and When) interact and depend on each other, the students are given the tools they need to write and then perform their own stories. “Creative Storytelling” is designed to work with the information the students have already been given by their teachers. As a musician, I “Explore Music” using simple techniques to help students understand rhythm, melody and meter. I play the banjo, lap dulcimer, mouth bow and guitar. My musical workshops include experiments in song writing, musical memory and the uses of music. I include not only western musical notation but ways other cultures use mnemonic devices to pass rhythms from one player to another. Asking a child “How do you use music?” is a great way to introduce music’s place in history. This workshop explores how songs and musical instruments came to America from Europe, Africa and Asia and how people adapted their cultures to fit their new lives in America. Many of the educational goals we have set for ourselves in Kentucky are addressed through these workshops. I will be happy to talk with individual teachers about how the workshops fit into the curriculum units and can be tailored to meet their needs—in fact, this is essential. In-service programs are also available. CREATIVE STORYTELLING I offer a residence that uses storytelling to teach creative writing. The residence can be from one to four weeks long depending on the goals of the teacher. I also do concerts of stories and folk music. I play the banjo, lap dulcimer and guitar. MUSIC, LANGUAGE ARTS, HISTORY, SOCIAL STUDIES. Music classes can use this presentation to introduce folk music. The presentation demonstrates musical scales and rhythms. Several musical instruments are played and their origins are discussed.
